Overview

At Woodstock Primary Academy, it is our intent to provide a high-quality physical education that provides our children with opportunities to showcase their talents. Our physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. We provide ample opportunities for children to engage in sport both inside and outside of our school day and pupils are able to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. We believe that through the opportunities that children are offered to compete in sport, they are able to build their character and help to embed values such as respect, resilience, fairness and sportsmanship. Across our PE lessons, children at Woodstock are encouraged to develop their teamwork and our bespoke curriculum celebrates the diversity and cultural wealth of the community by supporting children’s development physically, cognitively, socially and emotionally equipping them with transferrable skills for life.

During physical education, children will develop their fundamental movement skills in EYFS & KS1 and will become increasingly confident through accessing a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination. Our sports coverage allows children to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.

As children progress through the school into KS2, they will continue to apply a broader range of skills and learn how to use them in different ways in order to make actions and sequences of movement. Our children will develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success. We use a range of teaching styles and strategies to deliver the curriculum and aspire to create a culture where children will enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other.

We aim to inspire children of all ages to engage in a range of activities and facilitate children being physically active for sustained periods of time. On top of their PE lessons, children are able to further develop and refine their skills during their breaktimes, lunchtimes and in after school clubs. We offer a diverse range of sports and activities throughout the school day with adults on the playground supporting children. We have entered boys and girls teams into competitions and provide equal opportunities to all. On top of this, we provide outdoor learning experiences to help children further develop their confidence with children challenging themselves at the outdoor pursuits centre. Across the year, we enter competitions such as boccia and kurling competitions within the school games community providing further opportunities for children with SEND to showcase their talents.

We are committed to provide as many opportunities as possible for our children and ensure that all children’s achievements are valued.
