Overview
At Woodstock Primary Academy, our intent is to create a foreign language curriculum that inspires all of our learners. We believe learning a foreign language provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. Teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes and learn new ways of thinking.
We aim to implement the offer of a modern foreign language (French) to the curriculum across Key Stage Two using a high quality scheme of work which is designed to promote speaking and pronunciation, listening, reading & writing, grammar, intercultural understanding and language detective skills. The French scheme provides balanced opportunities for communication in both spoken and written French with key skills and vocabulary revisited repeatedly with increasing complexity to build on prior learning. French is taught in years 3 – 6 every two weeks to help pupils, retain their French learning whilst everyday classroom opportunities are used to further consolidate learning. Lessons incorporate a range of teaching strategies from independent tasks, paired and group work including role-play, language games and language detective work.
We measure the impact of our curriculum by listening to the children speaking in French and work produced in their French books and is monitored continuously through both formative and summative assessment. By the of the scheme of work children are expected to be able to engage in purposeful dialogue in practical situations, make accurate attempts to read unfamiliar words and phrases, speak and read aloud with confidence, demonstrate an understanding of spoken language by listening and responding appropriately, and identify word classes and apply grammatical rules they have learnt.
